Nevada County Sportsmen is dedicated to all types of shooting sports which includes archery, CMP, SASS, pistol, rifle, trap and youth training with emphasis on safety, skills and enjoyment in all of these shooting activities.
The site of the club is located about one mile South East of Nevada City, California and generally occupies the old hydraulic mining site known as "Canada Hill".
The firearms and trap area was originally utilized by the Nevada City Police Department and various other groups until 1942. It was then officially turned over to a local sportsmen group to be known as the "Canada Hill Gun Club" and incorporated in 1946 as the "Nevada County Sportsmen, Inc."
The "Creed and Purpose" of the incorporated club is described in the clubs Constitution but generally provides for supporting the propagation, conservation and harvest of forests, fish and game and to promote and cultivate Rod, Gun and Archery sports.
The original membership acquired about 7 acres of private land and leased about 7 additional acres from BLM. A clubhouse and associated facilities were then constructed and improved to support the activities of the membership. The club has since acquired approximately ten additional acres and leases an additional approximate twenty five.
The club soon became a community asset and began an annual event associated with the Grass Valley Sportsmen Club known as the "Dove Stew." The "Dove Stew" was a "Stag"' event and continued for a number of years.
Club activities became more family oriented in the mid 1980s and now hosts several major events. These events include the annual "June Archery Shoot" which attracts over 600 archers from California, Oregon, and Nevada as well as other States; the Annual NRA Endowment Trap Shoot; NRA affiliated Civilian marksmanship "High Power" Military style shoots; and "SASS" Cowboy Action Shoots.
Much of the clubs focus has shifted to supporting youth shooting sports programs such as the 4H shooting sports program, and the National Archery Association JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) program.
The club is a member affiliate of the NRA (National Rifle Association), the NFAA (National Field Archery Association, the CBH/SAA (California Bowmen Hunters/State Archery Association), the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program), "SASS" cowboy Action Shooting and is the local training facility for the nationally ranked Nevada County Gold JOAD Archery Team.
Our Trap, Rifle/Pistol and Archery programs provide year round activities and the Archery Range is an NFAA Five Star ranked range. Five Star ranking is the highest ranking in the NFAA and only a few exist in the state of California.
Membership consists of 200 corporate members and 45 affiliate members.
