Youth

There are few traditions passed down from generation to generation as those of archery, shooting and hunting. The Nevada County Sportsmen provide a safe environment for the youth of our community through the following programs; Archery, Sport Shooting, Hunter Education and 4-H.

4-H is held on 2nd Saturday of every month between October-June (excluding December). Activities include Archery/Rifle/Pistol/Trap (see below). Lunch is provided however donations are greatly appreciated. All Children interested in shooting Rifle/Pistol/Trap must complete a 3 hour safety class that is held in October and November).

4-H Archery starts at 8:00 AM and is not only an entry level program, it provides training and practical experience for ages 9 through high school. If you missed the safety class you will only be able to participate in the Archery portion of the 4-H program. 4-H Sport shooting starts at 1:00 AM for ages 9 through High School. Students learn firearm safety, shooting positions and technique, live fire practical experience and are given the opportunity to compete in a state wide postal shoot. Live fire is limited to .22 cal rifles. 4-H Pistol is part of the 4H sport shooting program for ages 12 through high school. All participants must participate in at least one year of rifle training to qualify. Training includes safe handling and discharge of pistols, proper care and cleaning of a variety of actions, and practical experience. 4-H Trap starts at 10:00 AM.

JOAD -Archery - is a youth archery program designed to teach both basic and advanced shooting skills. Training includes the proper care and handling of all shooting equipment, safe use of long bows, recurve and compound bows, adjustment and fitting of equipment, matching arrows with the bow, finger and mechanical release technique and all safety concerns. Gold Team -Archery is for the more advanced shooters with a wide range of age group. Participants will compete all over the country. More information can be found under Joad/Gold Team -click here.

Hunter Education - There are 4 Hunter Education Classes scheduled every year at this facility. Completion of this course will allow for the purchase of a California State hunting license.

All of these programs include the use of the equipment necessary to participate, or personal equipment may be used if authorized by the instructor. In most cases, all ammunition and targets are provided by the Nevada County Sportsmen Club.

All instruction is provided by instructors who have been trained and certified to teach in the discipline they instruct. We not only teach our sport, we teach life skills.
